In creating a dignified symbol of Chinatown, we found inspiration from the ancient Chinese structural element of the Dougong. This system of interlocking wooden brackets became an iterative design application in the construction of the gateway itself. Beginning with the shape of the triangle, the mold was carved using pedestrian pathways and the movement of the sun. This system molded as program was added, giving way to public seating and an area for tourist information.
